Core Resources, in collaboration with Glencore Technology, presented the application of the Albion Process™ for treating refractory ores at the Extraction 2018 and MillOps 2018 conferences. This presentation highlighted the process’s effectiveness in enhancing gold recovery from challenging ore bodies.
The Albion Process™ combines ultrafine grinding with oxidative leaching at atmospheric pressure, offering a cost-effective and efficient solution for processing refractory gold and base metal concentrates. Developed in 1994 at Core’s laboratories, the process is now licensed worldwide by Glencore Technology. Currently, there are multiple Albion Process™ plants in operation globally, including those treating zinc, lead, copper and refractory gold concentrates.
A notable case study presented was the GPM Gold project in Armenia. Core Resources collaborated with GPM to conduct detailed testwork, pilot plant trials, and managed the bankable feasibility study. The implementation of the Albion Process™ at GPM’s Ararat plant led to a significant increase in gold recovery rates—from a baseline of 20% to over 95%. The plant demonstrated robust performance, operating effectively across variable sulphur grades and throughputs, and even during the harsh Armenian winters without additional heating.
The success of the Albion Process™ at GPM Gold underscores its potential as a viable alternative to traditional methods like pressure oxidation (POx), roasting, and BIOX® for treating refractory ores. Its simplicity, lower capital and operating costs, and high recovery rates make it an attractive option for mining operations dealing with complex ore bodies.
