Mineral Technologies and Core Resources dual winners of METS Ignited 2018 Collaboration Award
The Australian Industry Growth Centre for the mining resources, technology and services (METS) sector has announced two winners of the METS Ignited Collaboration Award for 2018. Presented at the IMARC Gala Dinner in Melbourne on Wednesday 31 October, the award recognises Core Resources and Mineral Technologies’ partnership in the development and commercialisation phase of the Toowong Process which was invented by Core Resources in 2010.
Designed to address the ever-tightening constraints on the transport, importation and treatment of high arsenic concentrates, the Toowong Process is a novel leaching technology that removes arsenic at the mine-site, and then “fixes” it in an environmentally safe and stable form that enables final disposal at the mine-site.
The partnership has involved a two-year, $2 million design and engineering work program to develop the technology to the stage where it is now ready for deployment. The collaboration team included Jonathan Loraine and Lachlan Macdonald from Core Resources, and Michael Ross and Tom Lawson from Mineral Technologies.
Core Resources CEO, Dr Rob Coleman, says that the award follows the 2016 METS Ignited Collaboration Award which it received in partnership with Glencore Technology for the development, commercialisation and implementation of the Albion ProcessTM.
“Winning the METS Ignited award with Glenore Technology for the Albion ProcessTM and now winning the 2018 award with Mineral Technologies is testament to our team approach to working with industry leaders to bring innovation and world’s best practice to step change solutions for the mining sector,” said Rob.
The project was generously supported by a $1 million “Accelerating Commercialisation” grant from the Australian Commonwealth Government which allowed this work to be fast-tracked.
Collaborating with Core Resources is Downer’s mineral process engineering business, Mineral Technologies.
Jess Maddren, General Manager Process and Engineering for Downer’s Mineral, Energy and Industrial division says the finalist nomination was an excellent demonstration of teamwork and shared focus on delivering robust mineral processing and environmental outcomes.
“In working with Core Resources, we have been able to bring our global reach and understanding of mineral processing to help develop the Toowong Process into a more robust and cost-effective solution,” Jess said.
With process design and engineering to define capital and operating costs now completed, the ultimate objective is to enter into licencing agreements with end-users to use the technology.
