Core Resources, in collaboration with partners Mineral Technologies and Whittle Consulting, presented important new developments on its patented Toowong Process at the ALTA 2017 conference.
The Toowong Process, an emerging technology, is currently being commercialised with support from a $1 million Accelerating Commercialisation grant from AusIndustry. This innovative technology is designed to remove arsenic, antimony, and other deleterious elements from base metal concentrates produced during mining operations.
As the levels of contaminants in base metal concentrates continue to rise, increasing restrictions on trading these concentrates have created an urgent need for effective solutions. The Toowong Process offers a clean, efficient way to address this critical global environmental challenge.
The presentation at the ALTA 2017 conference included detailed costings for the Toowong Process and examined its potential impact on overall project value. The Toowong Process provides significant benefits for mining operations, including:
- The cost of implementing the technology is expected to be lower than the impurity penalty charges typically imposed on producers.
- In a reference case, the process increased copper production by 56% over the mine life.
- This increase in production resulted in a projected revenue boost of US$4 billion (nominal US$) over the life of the mine.
Dr David Way, CEO of JKTech (University of Queensland), stated: “This technology should be considered a game changer… The Toowong Process has the potential to unlock sites that are currently considered unviable.”
